Abstract

This research presents a report on the experience and teaching methodology applied in the undergraduate course in Chemistry classroom, for fourth year students, at the Instituto Federal do Paraná - Umuarama. The methodology applied sought to provide information about the textile dye industry, natural alternatives and their obtaining. In practice, a technique for the extraction and production of dye paste (lake pigment) obtained from the seeds of annatto (Bixa orellana) was carried out. From a literature review, understand the plant physiology of plants and microorganisms, as well as the chemical properties that confer quality to color; the historical contextualization and sensory experiences of the human relationship with the universe of dyes were addressed, aiming to provide the student with a foundation to become professionals capable of applying processes and the use of historically used natural inputs, along with new technologies, basing their choices, in the concepts of sustainability, enabling the development of an industry with reduced environmental impacts.
