Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of diagnoses of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially in children. Given that such individuals exhibit atypical sensory characteristics, the importance of designing more inclusive built environments to enhance their quality of life becomes evident. Among those with some form of disorder, these individuals are the most affected and influenced by spaces since, in most cases, they perceive sensory information intensely. Despite this, there are still no specific national standards and guidelines to guide architects and designers in creating environments that meet the needs of individuals with autism. In this context, neuroarchitecture plays a crucial role, assisting in identifying design strategies that are more suitable for this audience, both in private spaces like homes and in public spaces such as schools, daycare centers, clinics, and hospital environments. This work discusses the main characteristics of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and introduces the professionals who can be part of a team for diagnosis and support in treatment. Subsequently, the discussion moves to the architectural sphere, grouping recommendations and strategies to help architects and designers more effectively address the needs of individuals with ASD, aiming to create environments that contribute to the well-being and development of autistic individuals.
